Ed Surge - Saturday October 1, 2016
I spent the day learning about different ways to integrate technology in the classroom. My favorite part of the convention was the student panel (from Austin ISD and Manor ISD) who answered questions during lunch. What are our students saying?? MORE PROJECTS PLEASE! Let's integrate technology and come up with some projects! What was my favorite presentation? Swift CSP.

I am still buzzing from EdSurge (MORE PROJECTS). I am beginning a new project. Collaboration is happening! Some classes are using a novel they are reading in class, while others are using Cinderella Skeleton by Robert San Souci read in the library. Continuing with one grade level, and beginning with a new grade level, students are logging into their AISD Cloud. This is a big goal of mine to get our teachers and students comfortable with this proecess. Sí
se puede! Students will make vocabulary cards for the word wall. Cards will include the word used in context. Students will use context clues to predict meaning, then will use an online tool to define the word and part of speech and select an appropriate image to depict the word's meaning. Tech focus: use fonts, inserting images, online dictionary, WORD PROCESSING, and CLOUD.
No school like the old school! It's Halloween week, and I used a VHS tape (YES VHS!) with kindergarten. We watched Eric Carle, Picture Writer (https://shop.carlemuseum.org/picture-writer-2-dvd-art-th) an amazing resource. To purchase it again on DVD, I would need $40, so being thrifty, I stick with my tape. The video shows how Eric Carle paints "pretty papers" before he makes his collages and next week kindergarten students get to be illustrators - beginning with painting in the style of Eric Carle. I love that Eric Carle tells a story about when he was in kindergarten during the video. It really helps the kids to make personal connections.
I had an interesting conversation with a bilingual coach comparing and contrasting myon.com with Mackin VIA. She said she knew that I would know about the two, and came to me for advice.
In the library, I am working with a 4th grade GT group, collaborating with the classroom teacher. They have read Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. Students in the class illustrated each chapter. They needed to digitize the illustrations, and were planning to make a PowerPoint presentation. I introduced the group to Prezi, and they decided to use it. Now the group has all the pictures imported into Prezi. They took photos on the iPad, messaged them to email, and imported them into Prezi. They had to save 17 pictures! So proud of this group!
It's Freerice.com week! This is a favorite pre-Thanksgiving activity. Students answer questions regarding vocabulary, language, and MULTIPLICATION facts! For each question answered correctly, 10 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program. Philanthropy and learning together!
Students are using Weebly interactive again. This time we are studying maps and longitude and latitude.
